THE NEW WHITE SOUTH AFRICA

by Shirley Friedman

Stress
And much frustration.
Is part and parcel of our new nation.
Everyday living is different by far
With people killed for the sake of a car.
Mothers afraid to take their brood
Out
While shopping.
In case a feud should erupt.
Black on black,
Or black
and white
Getting into a political fight.
Crime is rife.
Is this the life
To lead?

But where to run?
Where to find some peace.
Some calm.
A way to live
Enjoy the sun.
It's time,
I think,
To call a halt.
To stop the crime.
Hijackings.
Assault.
To hold out a hand,
Offer a smile.
To walk for others the extra mile.
To love thy neighbour.
Black or white.
To forgive transgressions.
See the light.
It's time, I think,
To look within
And forget the colours of our skins.
Flesh for flesh,
Heart for heart.
No-one could truly tell us apart
Within our earthly coverings.
